In response to the chaos and desperation in post conflict East Timor and post disaster Aceh, permaculture has provided a truly long-term and regenerative mechanism for development. It has been eagerly grasped by local organisations and is providing community development, environmental repair and food sovereignty through culturally appropriate solutions. Adelaidian, Lachlan McKenzie has lived and worked in East Timor and Aceh, Indonesia, and will provide an engaging and thought provoking presentation about permaculture’s important role in developing countries and disaster situations. With climate change, resource depletion and environmental degradation becoming more serious by the year, the time to act has never been more urgent.
This evening is also a fundraiser for a game changing project – an open access on-line Tropical Permaculture Guidebook designed and produced specifically for developing countries. Co-written by Lachlan McKenzie and Timorese Ego Lemos, produced by Permaculture Timor-Leste (Permatil), xpand Foundation and Disruptive Media, based on the highly successful Permaculture Guidebook from Timor-Leste. It is a highly practical book with over 2000 detailed illustrations and downloadable chapter-by-chapter. Taking the broad aim of creating sustainability and regeneration, it provides the practical how-to steps for communities and farmers to actually achieve it. This encompasses all aspects of food production and living, especially addressing the steps needed to protect the environment, reduce climate change and develop resilience to its impacts.
All proceeds from this evening will go towards the production of the guidebook.
